Worth Checking Out
Here are some things that I have been dabbling in lately and I am finding that they are well worth it, and that I would like to share my thoughts. These are some of the things that have taken up large portions of my time lately.
Serial:
This is a podcast that depicts a murder trial that has seen much controversy. We follow a journalist as she thoroughly investigates every lead, testimony, shred of evidence, and timeline of this murder. The podcast takes you on a handful of twists and turns as the case has so many discrepancies. You will be along for the entire investigative process and be able to use your best judgment. Point of views and thoughts will change every episode. Try to figure out the case!!!! Unleash the inner detective in you.
S Town:
This is a podcast series that is very unique. We follow an investigative journalist as he plummets into the heart of small town Alabama. He is supposedly looking into a murder cover up, but finds that there is indeed no murder. The story then takes a different shape as we follow the life and on-goings of the initial informant. A brilliant mind that is twisted and scattered. We then look into his assets, his worth, his history, and so on. The story of John B. is quite an interesting one at that.
13 Reasons:
This is a great show. It has been awhile since I have watched it, but I recall it being very powerful. It shed light on the events surround the build up to a suicide of a young adolescent. They spare nothing as they paint a true picture of the building tension and how the storm takes over. You will experience such an array of emotion while watching. This is a great piece to show the importance of empathy, kindness, respect of others, speaking up, and so much more. Bullying/harassment/sexual assault in high school is prevalent and this show could be used as a powerful tool for kids. It sheds an unflattering light on a great many things and issues. This show made me think about the topic heavily. It weighed on me. It brings suicide awareness and prevention into focus.
Atypical:
Another great Netflix show. This show gives us an account and some insight into the autistic brain. Triggers, interests, social skills, difficulties, behaviors, and even thought processes are demonstrated. I find this to be incredibly interesting as my mother is an adaptive phy. ed. teacher and I have volunteered and work with autistic students. The show dances between seriousness and humor beautifully, while all the while being informational. A social awkward autistic boy setting out to find himself a girlfriend. This show sets out to bring understanding and impart knowledge of autism unto the viewers.
